John Mulaney Biography
John Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982in the city of Chicago in Illinois. His parents, a law professor named Ellen Stanton and a lawyer named Charles W. Mulaney, were of Irish descent. Raised in a Catholic home with his three siblings, he watched Ricky Ricardo from a young age on I love Lucy and fall in love with show business. John later got the opportunity to audition for the character of Kevin in the hilarious Home Alone movie when he was only 7 years old. However, his parents were skeptical and refused.
Mulaney therefore had a more traditional St. Clement School education for junior high. Still, the aspiring comedian found a way to make school work for him. Instead of reports, he would meet up with his best friend named John O’Brien, and the two would do skits about what they had learned at school. He was also a frequent visitor to the Museum of Broadcast Communications, which allowed him to watch archived episodes of the shows he loved.
The aspiring comedian graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep in 2000 and attended the university his parents attended – Georgetown University – to major in English literature and religion. In Georgetown he joined an improv group that included Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia. After they bonded with the group, he would later accompany Birbiglia on stand-up tours, which helped him hone his stage skills.
After graduating, John Mulaney moved to New York and was hired as a Comedy Central office assistant. He stayed for a year before pitching the idea of I Love the 30’s as a parody of the I Love the 80’s . He developed the show with his old improviser friend Nick Kroll.
